And How Is It Related to Assistive Technology?
ChatGPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, was developed by the AI research company OpenAI. It is an artificial intelligence chatbot that processes natural human language to generate responses. In simple terms, you can ask ChatGPT a question, and it will provide you with an answer.
For example, when we asked ChatGPT, “What is assistive technology?” it responded:
Assistive technology encompasses any device, equipment, or software created to help individuals with disabilities accomplish tasks that might otherwise be challenging or unfeasible.
However, it offers much more than that. You can ask it to explain quantum mechanics, assist with planning a fun day in New York City as a tourist, write computer code, or solve mathematical equations.
The latest version, GPT-4, can process images and create designs.
While ChatGPT offers many benefits, it also has some limitations:
- It may occasionally provide incorrect information.
- It might generate harmful instructions or biased content.
- Its knowledge is limited to events and information up to 2021, so it cannot answer questions like, “What is the weather today?” or “Why didn’t my favorite baseball team perform well yesterday?”
What Does ChatGPT Have to Do with Assistive Technology?
Be My Eyes and Envision AI have introduced a beta version of GPT integration with their technologies!
Be My Eyes is a free app that connects blind or visually impaired individuals with volunteers for sighted assistance. With GPT integration, users can now interact with a virtual volunteer to ask questions about images. For instance, you can inquire about the contents of your refrigerator and then get suggestions on what dish you could prepare with those ingredients!
Envision offers a free app, Envision AI, and also sells glasses that read text aloud, describe scenes, recognize colors, identify money and people, and locate objects. The glasses use the Google Glass camera, which can also call a friend for sighted assistance. With the integration of GPT AI technology, users can now ask for detailed information about a restaurant menu and specifically inquire, “What are the desserts?”
We spoke with Karthik Mahadevan, CEO and Co-Founder of Envision, about his views on AI and the future. He shared, “The latest GPT advancements from OpenAI reveal tremendous potential for processing documents and images with Envision Glasses. These AI-powered smart glasses can now interpret complex questions and prompts in natural language and understand the context of both documents and images,” Karthik explains. “These remarkable innovations bring us closer to realizing our ultimate goal: an AI so sophisticated that it feels like having a sighted assistant constantly by your side.”
