Pig fat, fish oil: What is the controversy over beef tallow in Tirupati Balaji's laddu and how was it revealed?
A big revelation has been made about adulteration in the laddus of Tirupati temple of Andhra Pradesh. Fish oil and animal fat have been confirmed to be found in the prasad. This information has come to light in an investigation report of CALF Lab under National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), after which the political atmosphere in the state has heated up.

A major controversy has erupted over the alleged use of substandard ingredients and animal fat in the world famous Tirupati laddu. The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Thursday claimed that the Gujarat-based livestock laboratory has confirmed the adulteration. TDP spokesperson Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy presented the alleged lab report in a press conference, which confirmed the presence of "beef tallow" in the ghee sample given.
This revelation has created a stir in the politics of Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh Congress president YS Sharmila wrote on social media platform X, "Chandrababu Naidu's comment that he used animal oil instead of ghee in laddu prasadam as CM is detrimental to the sanctity and prestige of Tirumala. He has tainted Lord Venkatesh, the deity worshipped by crores of Hindus. We demand CM Chandrababu Naidu to immediately constitute a high-level committee or order a CBI inquiry if your allegations have no political dimension and if you have no intention of politicising emotions."
Shocking report came in July
TTD has suggested several measures to restore the taste and quality, and also sent ghee samples to NDDB, Gujarat. The laboratory report released in July confirmed the presence of fat in the laddus. Following this, TTD returned the stock of ghee supplied by AR Dairy Foods, Dindigul, Tamil Nadu and blacklisted the contractor. Following this, TTD selected Karnataka Milk Federation to supply ghee.
TTD has formed an expert committee to check the quality of prasadam. The committee comprises Dr B Surendranath, former principal scientist, National Dairy Research Institute, Vijayawada; Bhaskar Reddy, dairy expert; Professor B Mahadevan, IIM-Bangalore; and Dr G Swarnalatha, from Telangana Veterinary University.
TDP government probes
The TDP government in June appointed senior IAS officer J Shyamala Rao as the new executive officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the temple complex. Several decisions were taken to improve Tirupati, including ordering a probe into the alleged poor quality, taste and texture of laddus.
What did the lab report say?
The alleged lab report also claimed the presence of "lard" (related to pig fat) and fish oil in the samples. The laddus were sampled on July 9, 2024 and the lab report came out on July 16.
What is beef tallow?
The main controversy is over the alleged use of beef tallow, which is the fat rendered from cuts of beef such as rump roast, ribs and steaks. It can also be made by melting pure fat extracted from meat, which turns into a pliable substance when cooled and resembles soft butter at room temperature.
3 lakh laddus are made every day
Laddus are prepared as prasad in Tirupati temple, in which 3 lakh laddus are made and distributed every day. Beef fat, animal fat and fish oil are mixed in these laddus, which is included in the ghee with which laddus are prepared. The surprising thing is that these laddus are offered as prasad not only to the devotees but also to God.
